When we look into an architectural design of a Chorten (Stupa), there are eight different kinds of Chorten in Buddhism which individually represents different moments in the life of Lord Buddha. And Thimphu National Memorial Chorten is said to be a ‘Jangchub Chorten,’ from one of the eight kinds of Stupa, which signifies victory over inner demons and enlightenment from Samsara – circle of unlimited births and deaths. The Memorial Stupa, popularly known as Thimphu National Chorten was built in 1974 by Queen Mother Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuk in memory of his son HM Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, the third Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. His Majesty is said to have expressed numerous times, an intention of building a Chorten in Thimphu where people can convene for various religious practices. Chortens are usually painted white to signify the essence of Buddhism and purity of Buddha mind. The Thimphu Chorten holds carved images of Lord Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, protective Bodhisattvas, and other wrathful deities. It has four entrances to signify doors of enlightenment. The second and third floors house images that depict the precepts from the teachings of Guru Padmasambhava that were later revealed by Tertoens. Thimphu National Memorial Chorten is not only a seat of faith for Bhutanese but also the bearer of rich Bhutan history. Therefore, you can see Bhutanese of almost all walks of life seeking spiritual contentment circumambulating it clockwise and chanting prayers in Thimphu Chorten.
It is one of the iconic landmarks in Thimphu where tourists get to observe the spirituality of Bhutanese people. When elder parents with their grandchildren come to circumambulate the Chorten and young Bhutanese practice spiritual exercises, and photography enthusiasts would get good subjects of photography. If you climb the top floor of the Chorten, you can get a good view of Thimphu city.
